I'm requiring portfolios in all my classes (English, yearbook, and newspaper). Just can't decide how best to set one up...having been playing with a template. I do like the student's reflecting on their writings, the books read, and the ranking of poetry...all of which I plant to allow my students to be exposed to much more. I like the idea of a digital portfolio...one that would progress with the student...right on to college. For this to work, though, we, as a department, need to agree on a template. Just doesn't make sense to ask a student to re-format for each teacher. Once again...going to borrow more of this book throughout this year!

My thoughts on rubrics...this is the first person who I think I've encountered who is against rubrics! Rubrics have just made by grading so much easier! But I can see her points. I do like that rubrics because 1) the teacher and the student begin with the end-in-mind and 2) have I mentioned it makes grading easier...and fairer? I'll have to think on this one some more!

Marking up a paper less...oh, the power in that! I appreciate that insight. Drafting more. I also like that. More student choice, more decision-making, more responsibility. I like it!

Now it's my turn to feel bad...I've slacked off on this discussion while trying to get things in order for school. Finishing this discussion is high on my priority list for next week!! Sorry ladies!
